SAN FRANCISCO-- San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium might not look like the hulking concrete structure it once was, but to one man, the place will always feel like home.
On Saturday, May 19, 2001, at 2 p.m., the City of San Francisco and the Recreation and Park Department will honor one of the city’s most distinguished athletes, Bob St. Clair, by officially dedicating the stadium’s field in honor of him.
St. Clair, a San Francisco native who played football for Polytechnic High School, the University of San Francisco and the San Francisco 49ers during the 1940s, -50s and -60s, played a total of 19 seasons and 189 games on the storied field, believed to be far more than any other player in city history.
At every level, St. Clair achieved extraordinary success, being named All-City in high school, All-Coast in college, and All-NFL three times during his 11-year professional career. In 1990, he received the game’s highest honor, being inducted into the National Football League’s Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
At 6-9 and 263 pounds, St. Clair was one of the game’s biggest, toughest and more intimidating offensive linemen. For years, he paved the way for the 49ers’ famed Million Dollar Backfield with his devastating blocks, unusual quickness and keen intelligence.
Off the field, St. Clair was just as determined, eventually becoming a successful businessman, the mayor of Daly City and a councilman in San Mateo.

Owens, Y.A. Title, Billy Kilmer, Ollie Matson, Burl Toler, Hugh McElhenny and Johnny Unitas.
